Common/Opposites presents the most recent works in clay by Les Manning, the internationally recognized ceramist based in Medicine Hat, Alberta. For the past several decades, Manning has elegantly rendered the topographical forms of the Rockies in laminated and shaped clay vessels. In these new sculptures, Manning uses his firm grounding in the land and landscape around us to create ceramic works that vault beyond, into a realm where our recognition of everyday things jostles and collides with metaphor, revealing the rich and contradictory poetry of our ordinary world.*

“Ask me why I draw, I’ll tell you I don’t know; why do you write? Why do you read? Why do you put on a CD and dance? To me, making little pictures to hang on the wall is my language, and it’s up to you to hear what I am saying. It’s not complicated. This one says I’m happy, that one says I miss you. If you don’t understand it, that’s okay, I don’t understand Gaelic or Japanese.

I dream of learning many different languages some day. The dip of a paddle as I push my boat across the water, the smell of the perfect coffee bean for the perfect coffee, and how to fix a bike so it will run as smooth as butter. But art will always be the first language I learned to speak.

A Visual Communications Symposium

Visiting artists Robert Katz and Pat Kikut are on campus March 21-25, and will be dropping in on some of our Visual Communications classes throughout the week.

The Visual Communications Department has planned several activities for Art Week, including a movie on Tuesday noon from filmmakers Robert Katz and Douglas Quin, a reception on Wednesday for “Other” at the Hive Artists’ Hub, and the opening reception for the mixed media show “Idea/Meaning” at Squared Gallery Medalta on Friday evening. The highlight of the week will take place on Thursday with a slide presentation and lecture from Robert and Pat. Art Week posters are covering the hallways in the N & H Buildings if you need further information on any of these events.

Robert Katz is currently a Professor of Art at University of Maine at Augusta.

Textured - A VisCom Fashion Show

Instructor Laara Cassells assigned the students in ARFA 305 3D Design the task to create and model wearable sculptural clothing made from non-fabric materials.

In Laara’s previous sculptural fashion shows we have seen unique dresses made from beer cans, candy wrappers, and bubble wrap, a sports coat made of playing cards, and a sandpaper leisure suit. The results are always unusual and fun. Be sure not to miss Textured, a Visual Communications Fashion Show, on Friday March 18th, from Noon to 1:00 pm outside the Crave here on campus.

Rodney Konopaki and Rhonda Neufeld
The energetic prints and drawings in this exhibition by British Columbia artists Rodney Konopaki and Rhonda Neufeld stem from their exploration into artistic collaboration, and involve sharing, interfering, walking, observing, recording, reflection and dialogue, both in the studio and in a variety of outdoor settings. Underlying their collaboration is a fascination with the collision of conscious aesthetic decisions and ‘chance operation’, interpreted perhaps most famously by John Cage, but reaching back to Dada and Duchamp..*
